"Kalvan" is an enormously poorly executed film due to its forgettable humor, repetitive non-linear narration, and mediocre performances. The GV Prakash film Kalvan, which had a depressingly lackluster first quarter for Tamil cinema, is here to show that the jading phase is far from finished. Something worse than a lousy movie? A film that never lives up to the thrilling moments it teases you with.

The story of two small-time thieves Kemban (GV Prakash) and Soori (Dheena) is told in Kalvan, which doesn't reinvent the wheel when it comes to the characters and their backstories. Kemban and Soori see a destitute old man (Bharathiraja) in an old age home in Sathyamangalam and ask him to join them so they can become a "family." However, there's more to it than meets the eye because the two have less than honorable objectives. As if that weren't enough, the veteran also has a history.

The Mayana Kollai celebration is described to us; nevertheless, it turns out to be a pretext for a standard heroine introduction. A lone elephant is said to be causing havoc in the village while on the loose; Deepavali rockets are used to drive him away. We anticipate that the compelling story points will come together to create a captivating movie, but we never get even close to that. Actually, the main plot of the movie doesn't start until the second half of the movie. Up to that point, the scenes are replete with numerous tired clichés. Balamani (Ivana) is first seen in the opening scene wearing a night face mask, which causes Kemban and Soori—who have broken into her home covertly—to become terrified upon seeing her.You get the idea...Have you missed it? In another scene, a character expects Balamani and her friend to clean Kemban and Soori's house because that's what a family's daughter-in-law is supposed to do. When you need that elephant, where is he?

It's unfortunate that the movie still gets the fundamentals wrong, even for a movie that relies heavily on clichés. There are countless titles where ladies have fallen for males who have broken into their homes, from Thiruda Thiruda and Pithamagan to even one of the subplots in Raman Thediya Seethai (2008) when the same accidental meet-cute happens for a pair like the one from Kalvan. However, the power of film allows you to see past the ridiculousness of the situation and even start to cheer for them. We aren't fortunate enough to see anything like that in Kalvan; Balamani despises Kemban in the first half of the story and then, in the second half, she falls in love with him despite his attempts to guilt-trip her. When will that elephant arrive?

The two things that keep you watching this agony despite the lackluster performances, repetitive non-linear storyline, forgettable humor, and unmemorable music are the amazing acting of the late great director Bharathiraja and the gorgeous photography of PV Shankar. As an accomplished DOP, Shankar makes up for what he lacks as a first-time filmmaker. Conversely, the seasoned director-turned-actor is becoming well-known for his acting. The most intriguing thing about Kalvan is his past, so it's unfortunate that it's told as a monologue interspersed with a slideshow of vibrantly colored pictures. Even the CG tiger, which is poorly done, turns an otherwise interesting scene into something inadvertently funny.

Although Kalvan was marketed as a movie about elephants and had an elephant symbol on every poster, we don't see much of the real animal, which makes our protagonist character's idea to use it even more ridiculous. To label Kalvan a "elephant film" would be likening Titanic to a movie about icebergs and Padayappa to a movie about granite hills. What was supposed to be a story about friendships in the middle of a struggle between people and nature turns into a white elephant.
