An assessment of the film Part Two of Dune Setting establishing the universe, characters, and moral quandary of Frank Herbert's epic science fiction novel from 1965 took up the whole first act of Denis Villeneuve's adaptation. Fortunately, the follow-up moves along somewhat faster than. Though much of the groundwork had already been established, Dune: Part Two could have dared more. Like its protagonist, the movie nevertheless keeps dreaming bigger than it is willing to take risks.
The suspense and intrigue of Dune: Part 2 will endure as long as it takes place in a desert. Greig Fraser, the cinematographer, skillfully captures the boundless beauty and savagery of the terrain in his shots by using the wide, golden sweep as his canvas. Depending on their mental states, characters can appear larger than the desert they are trying to control or turn into specks in the glittering sea. When Greig erases all color from the screen and replaces it with a soft moonlight color scheme once the action departs the desert, you want for the rose-tinted amber light that he showered the sand dunes in from the beginning.
Patrice Vermette, the Oscar-winning production designer for Part One, isn't putting up her best effort for the sequel. The desert does much of the world-building, and he is left to lend his knowledge to the tiny parts of the larger picture. But because of their sleek design and compact size, the way he constructed the tents, sand compactors, and even the binoculars transports us back to the setting and time period of the narrative. Collaborating with his incredibly skilled artisans, Denis builds a cultural capsule that amplifies Frank Hebert's concepts multiple times.
The two most well-written scenes in the film take place in a desert. When Stilgar (Javier Bardem) takes Jessica Ferguson (Javier Ferguson) to a hidden reservoir and explains that it is holy water made from the bodily fluids of those who have died in the desert, Jessica Ferguson (Bardem) immediately understands the Fremen way of life—they steal, conserve, and revere water. Stilgar tells Jessica not to throw up in the desert and not to waste so much body water, and he adds further significance to their earlier discussion when he says, "Don't waste your water, even for the dead," after she sheds a tear and he licks it.
Another scene illustrates the love language of the desert well. While sitting on a sand dune under that amber light of eclipse, Paul (Timothee Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya) discuss their differences from one another. She doesn't believe him when he tells her that in his own country, where there is as much water as sand, people go "swimming"—diving into water. With a look of wonder on her face, Chani explains that since the desert treats men and women equally, she would prefer to stay away from the world of castles. The most romantic thing a man can say to a woman in the present world is that he wants to be treated equally. That is what Paul says he wants from her. They exchange kisses to share their waters after that.
